Pobitora

Pabitara or Pobitora is a wildlife sanctuary in Assam, India. It is famous for having the highest density of the Indian rhinoceros in the country. It covers an area of 38.85 km 2 (15.00 sq mi) and provides grassland and wetland habitat for various animals and birds12


Some of the mammals that live in Pabitara are golden jackal, wild boar, feral water buffalo, barking deer, Indian leopard and rhesus macaque13 It is also an important bird area with over 375 species of birds recorded14


Pabitara is also a source population for the Indian Rhino Vision 2020, a conservation programme that aims to increase the number of rhinos in Assam by translocating them to other protected areas. Eight rhinos were translocated from Pabitara to Manas National Park between 2008 and 20111


Pabitara is located about 30 km east of Guwahati and can be reached by road, rail or air. It offers various activities for visitors such as jeep safari, elephant safari, bird watching and boat

The best time to visit Pabitara Wildlife Sanctuary is between November and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, the grasslands are short, and the migratory birds are present123. However, some visitors might also enjoy the monsoon season from June to September, when the landscape is lush and green, and the wetlands are full of water.
